That’s what it’s all about

  • The Cleveland Indians are dropping their racist name.

  • The name of the upcoming baseball team has not yet been decided.

  • US President Donald Trump does not agree with the decision at all.

After years of protests, Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians are dropping their racist name. The group confirmed the move on Monday after earlier reports by the “New York Times” and “Washington Post”.

Ohio’s baseball team has been called the Cleveland Indians since 1915. The new name and schedule are still to be determined. “Because this is so important, we are not rushing these decisions,” said team owner Paul Dolan in a letter to fans. Until there is a new name, the name of the team is Cleveland Indians.

The baseball team is the second major league team to bow to the pressure after the Washington Football Team shed its old name, the Redskins, over the summer. “What’s going on? It’s not good news even for the ‘Indians’,” commented US President Donald Trump on Twitter.

“Cleveland is the most important part of the name”

Cleveland parted ways with its mascot, a cartoon Native American, last year. When the Capitals football players announced their decision to drop the Redskins moniker in July, the Indians said they were taking a hard look at their own name. Dolan wrote that he associates many of the past with the Indians name, but “I truly believe that Cleveland is the most important part of our team name.”

Criticism of the name — including the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL or the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL — has been around for years. After the death of the African-American George Floyd in May and the subsequent anti-racism protests in the USA, these teams were also under pressure. Chiefs and Blackhawks are not known to be considering changing their team name.
