SC Freiburg deservedly won the Greek championship against Olympiakos Piraeus. The hope of spending the winter in the Europa League is growing.

SC Freiburg kept a cool head in the witches cauldron and took another step towards the Europa League playoffs. The Bundesliga club were beaten 3-0 (2-0) at Olympiakos Piraeus after a sloppy performance on Thursday, and after two days of play in Group G, they have a maximum of six points. Nicolas Höfler (5th minute) and double goalscorer Michael Gregoritsch (25th, 53rd) scored for the clearly superior Badeners, who beat Azerbaijan champions Karabah Agdam 2-1 at the start of the group stage. Greece’s record champion Olympiakos is still at zero points.

After half an hour, the game in Piraeus was stopped for a moment by the Slovenian Matej Jug, because firecrackers had been thrown onto the field from the stands. Just before the start, Olympiakos fans started pyrotechnics in the stands. Freiburg missed the expected charged atmosphere at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, but early.

Höfler ends up in the goal

Höfler fired Vincenzo Grifo’s free kick from the right field into the bottom left corner. Baden quickly took the lead against Agdam – and once again they completely dominated the first half. Gregoritsch’s shot hit the right outside post (13′), Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s shot was no problem for Piraeus goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

In the 25th minute, Gregoritsch scored 2-0 with a powerful shot from close range for the guests, who surprisingly decided not to go around and had the same starting line-up as in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0). .

Olympiakos very weak

47-time Greek champions Olympiakos, who failed to qualify for the Champions League and had a mixed start in the league, played very poorly. Freiburg’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken got into trouble only in the 39th and 72nd minutes.

The Breisgau team got off to a dream start in the second round as well. After Matthias Ginter’s application, Gregoritsch calmly cleared the ball to make it 3-0 and rob the hosts of their last hope. Freiburg remained in control throughout – and unbeaten for the sixth game in a row. In the final stages, the Sports Club made several changes and thus saved energy for next Sunday’s TSG 1899 Hoffenheim league match.
