In a season without a big Revierderby, it’s that time again on Saturday (15:30 LIVE on Sky): Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 meet in a duel between the big Ruhrpott rivals. Sky reporters have put forward four theses that show how important the Derby is to both clubs.
1. Derby thesis by Sven Westerschulze and Jesco von Eichmann:
BVB needs a derby win so that the mood doesn’t change.
The game at Manchester City was good, but Dortmund lost it in the end. And last Saturday Borussia made a really bad performance 0:3 in Leipzig – correction is the order of the day!
In addition, the black and yellow suffered a painful home defeat against Bremen. If BVB also fails against the second-placed and district rivals, this could lead to a mood swing. In other words: If Dortmund doesn’t win, the good mood built around coach Edin Terzic and sporting director Sebastian Kehl in the summer could change.
2. Derby thesis by Sven Westerschulze and Jesco von Eichmann:
The true nature of this BVB team will be revealed in the derby.
BVB clearly have a better team in terms of quality, Schalke are a blatant outsider than ever before. If Dortmund lose, it will be because BVB didn’t bring enough character, passion and will to the pitch.
In recent years, one accusation has often been that they weren’t involved in the big games. The derby is a big game, for the fans it is even bigger than the duel against FC Bayern. The team has to prove that they not only have the quality but also the mentality.
Despite England’s week and injury problems: BVB must clearly win the derby. Especially for fans who take the post-Derby feeling to their workplaces and into the following weeks. It’s not just about three points, it’s about the well-being of the entire club and fans.
3. Dirk Große Schlarmann’s derby thesis:
Without derby experience, it is almost impossible to play this special game.
Only one professional in the Schalke team has ever played in a district derby: goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann. However, the goalkeeper will not be on the field on Saturday. Schalke have never gone into duels with their eternal enemy with such an inexperienced derby side. For comparison: Mats Hummels alone has already played 20 derbies for BVB.
In a duel against the much more experienced professionals of Borussia Dortmund, you have only one option: you have to overcome your emotions.
But if you don’t know what this game is about and what it means to the club, you can’t get those feelings. Reading it in the newspaper or being told by Gerald Asamoah and Mike Büskens is not enough. You’ve probably felt this special feeling before.
4. Dirk Große Schlarmann’s derby thesis:
A win in the derby would mean three months of team building for S04.
Schalke’s team was completely reassembled in the summer. The structure of the team has not been formed yet. So far, this process has been slow. The team’s Bundesliga season did not start well, leading players such as Simon Terodde are busy with themselves. Nothing has formed yet.
If Schalke manage to win this game against all odds, it would be a giant step in the team’s development.
For a team to grow together, nothing is more valuable than winning. And success in the district derby against Dortmund remains the best of all Schalke victories.
