This one song: Modern Baseball – Your Graduation

Your Graduation was released in 2014 as part of the second studio album You’re Gonna Miss It All. With the second track, Modern Baseball managed to enter the charts for the first time, but it was not enough for more than number 97. “Your Graduation” remains one of the flagships of the band, which has been in obscurity since 2017.

Friends forever?

As the name suggests, the song is about (school) degrees and the related life changes. All of us know it: People you’ve been in school with for years, you never see again in your day to day life. But maybe the same goes for the people you thought you could never tear yourself away from – this is how frontman Brendan Lukens described the song and sings on the chorus: “You weren’t the only one who thought of us like that / I spend most nights awake, awake / I never thought that I, oh, would see the day / Anywhere I let you go, let you walk away / Where I let you walk away”.

Modern Baseball experienced the classic career of the pop-punk band. Two friends, Brendan Lukens and Jake Wald, made music together as children before reuniting at Drexel University in Philadelphia and recording their debut album “Sports” alone in said university’s recording studio. Drummer Sean Huber and bassist Ian Farmer also joined the recordings of “Sports”, completing the quartet.

The sequel “You’re Gonna Miss It All” was released two years later and represented the Americans’ first chart success. In the meantime, Modern Baseball played several concerts in the United States and Europe. Your Graduation quickly became the band’s biggest hit and currently has over 50 million streams on Spotify.

You weren’t the only one who thought of us that way

“Your Graduation” is one of the few songs where drummer Sean Huber took the vocal part. The music video shows Brendan Lukens in various situations with his girlfriend talking to him while he just stares off into space. The sets are always from teenage-style Halloween parties to children’s rooms. At the end of the video, Brendan Lukens is seen leaving his girlfriend and his unhappy relationship as his ex-girlfriend sits crying in her prom clothes.

In 2016, the third studio album “Holy Ghosts” was released, which also managed to get a place on the charts. Since then, the band has been silent. In 2017, frontman Lukens announced that the band members are focusing on their mental health first. He also later announced that it was not a classic band breakup with a farewell tour and all that entails, but rather an indefinite hiatus. Even today, there are no signs of a return, but maybe it’s like old acquaintances from school: somewhere you meet again and suddenly a friendship sprouts again – in the case of modern baseball, at least it is hoped.
